Wicker Independent Living Supports Hackcessible with Mobility Walker Donation
Ross Care is proud to continue our support of Sheffield Universities' Hackcessible event, an innovative project dedicated to engaging students in designing accessible technology solutions. This year, our Sheffield-based retail outlet Wicker Independent Living contributed by donating a standard mobility walker to assist a team in modifying it for a younger person with specific needs.
This donation was made in response to an inspiring challenge centered around Sarah, a young lady with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The challenge aimed to redesign a walker for young-adult users, creating a product that better reflects their needs and preferences. Initially, the team explored designing a fun and engaging unicorn-themed child walker, but they later decided to enhance a pre-existing walker with young-adult-friendly features rather than building one from scratch.
As part of the Hackcessible program, participants engaged in a six-week workshop to develop ideas and solutions. With the final make-a-thon weekend scheduled for mid-February, teams are now gathering the necessary components to bring their concepts to life. Our donation ensures they have a suitable mobility aid to work with, helping them to prototype an innovative and practical solution.
We are thrilled to see young designers and engineers applying their creativity to enhance mobility solutions and promote inclusive design. By supporting initiatives like Hackcessible, Ross Care continues its commitment to improving accessibility and empowering individuals with disabilities.
