Work Experience with Connor at East Sussex Wheelchair Service

After a successful work experience in 2021 collaborating with Little Gate Farm, the East Sussex Wheelchair Service has again extended its support to the farm's Supported Employment initiative.

Little Gate Farm is a charity based in Beckley, East Sussex, with a decade-long history of securing paid positions for individuals with learning disabilities and autism. Their philosophy centres on empowering individuals to excel in their roles by aligning their skills with suitable job placements, thereby transforming lives positively.

Jeev, the Community Health & Engagement Officer (CHEO) at East Sussex Wheelchair Service, took the helm as the project coordinator and initiated contact with LGF to launch the project, which was met with enthusiasm from the LGF team, notably Rob Smith, who handled the project from their end.

After assessing possible areas for involvement, Connor, a 20-year-old Animal husbandry graduate with a passion for wildlife, was selected for his interest in mechanical work. Paul Veitch, appointed as the Job Coach by LGF and Connor, visited Ross Care to evaluate the working environment. Initially reserved, Connor gradually grew more comfortable during the visit. It was uncertain whether he would fit into the workplace culture due to his initial hesitance. However, further discussions revealed his intelligence and passion, prompting his decision to proceed with the work experience.

To facilitate Connor's integration, adjustments in the workplace were necessary. Health and Safety representative Steve Johns conducted a Risk Assessment based on Connor's details. A meeting with the Warehouse Manager and the voluntary assistance of Darren Wakeford, a Workshop Engineer, were arranged to help identify areas where Connor could excel.

Connor commenced his work experience under the guidance of Job Coach Paul on 22/08/2023. Despite initial challenges, he quickly grasped the work processes and demonstrated a keen understanding of his contributions. His shared interests with Darren, along with the guidance given by Paul and the support of the warehouse team, allowed him to seamlessly integrate into the workplace, becoming a valued team player.

Over time, Connor's skills in wheelchair reconditioning flourished, progressing from basic tasks to diagnosing mechanical issues. His ability to maintain focus amid distractions was commended, and his social confidence blossomed, endearing him to the warehouse staff. Their fondness for him led to shared lunches, discussions, and an organic request for his permanent employment, which was eventually fulfilled.

The success story of Connor's integration and eventual employment was a testament to Little Gate Farm's Supported Employment initiative, a charity based in Beckley, East Sussex, with a decade-long history of securing paid positions for individuals with learning disabilities and autism. Their philosophy centres on empowering individuals to excel in their roles by aligning their skills with suitable job placements, thereby transforming lives positively.
